The 6th of June marks the 2nd anniversary of Tori House! Founders Samantha & her husband Gamini has always been on the hunt for goods that bring a nostalgic feeling of being at home with family, and realised there was significant demand in Sri Lanka for home decor items with artsy, elegant and adorable design. All the pieces have been handpicked from different parts of the world. They represent a modern, aesthetically pleasing collection, which will elegantly enhance your home or even office. Since then we have grown immensely. The opening of a new store in Nawala, and adding more some wonderful people to our little team! We thought we’ll do a Q & A for you to get to know us better!
1. Who works in the shop?
There are six of us in total. Sangeeth, Thiwantha, Lakshitha & Anshaf are the people who you see when you visit our stores. They all alternate between the Siebel Avenue shop and the Nawala showroom. We love the variation, especially when customers recognize them from one shop to the other.
2. Tell us a little about the team.
Thiwantha has been with us since day one and right after Sangeeth joined along… On the other hand, Lakshitha and Anshaf joined us very recently and they couldn’t be more perfect for the job. All four of them are loved by our customers with their smiling faces & humble personality. We can honestly say we couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with.
3. What is the concept behind Tori House?
Almost 90% of the Tori House handpicked products that are imported. As we all know Sri Lanka is a small island and as much as we would like to have unique products from all over the world, not everyone has access to that.
We import mostly cute vintage themed products from Australia, Dubai, China & Malaysia. We have a policy of not repeating the same product more than twice since we want to stick to the concept of “unique” home décor Introducing home decor items that bring in a sense of elegance, warmth and coziness to homes is our number one priority.
4. Do you have many tourists visit the shop, or is it mainly locals?
We have a mix of customers majority of them being locals who have a discerning taste for cute vintage home décor and furniture. We do have tourists that visit our stores, from different places in the world including Russia, Australia, America, China, India, Maldives, Malaysia etc.
5. What’s our favourite Tori House fragrance scent?
As a popular vote our personal favourite is French Cade & lavender!
6. When is the busiest period?
Christmas is our favourite season and we think our customers feel the same. The lead up to Christmas was a very busy time for us. We love helping our lovely customers pick out the perfect gifts for their family and friends.
7. Do spouses come into the store for last-minute gift ideas? What do you recommend?
They do indeed, particularly before Valentine’s Day, birthdays and anniversaries. We watch out for the look of bewilderment on the spouse’s faces and depending on the occasion we advise from there. We have found that our candles, diffusers, photo frames make a perfect last-minute gift for all occasions.
